Effloresence Kinetic Lamp
This lamp transforms in order to redirect light, performing the functions of both lantern and overhead light.
Light quality can have a large impact on how users feel within a space, even if they are not aware of it. Users do not often have an emotional attachment to their lights, only paying attention to them if they are so poor they get in the way of performing a task adequately.
The most important design considerations in regards to this project were bringing natural form, natural materials and natural lighting together using an artificial light source and the transformative “blooming” aspect of the light.
The lamp twists up or down, allowing the light from the LED strips to be spread out horizontal, or focused downwards from the lamp.
Initial Explorations
This therapy lamp is suited for residential customers who may experience seasonal affective disorder during the winter months. Because their affliction is seasonal, during the summer months this lamp can be used as a portable electric lantern. This design features a flexible body lined with LEDs that can be adjusted for light therapy use and outdoor use, a removable handle, and a charging station.
Form Development
The form was developed through a range of prototypes of varying fidelity. The mechanism of transformation was inspired by an opening and closing water valve mechanism.
